Date: 24 October 1998 (MATCH ABANDONED AT 45 MINUTES)
Well I totted up the cost of my day: train, tube, lunch, snacks en route, beers, admission, programme, fanzine ... I make it £31.40.
And was it worth it? Well the best thing was the sight of all those U's fans, 3-1 up, standing in silent disbelief as they heard that the game had been abandoned. And we, who had moments earlier been convincing one another that our luck was turning, now taunting them with renditions of "Bournemouth's Going Home" and "Singing in the Rain".
The worst thing was the realisation that we'll now have to go back to that crumby apology for a soccer ground for a third visit this season!
The consensus among those of us travelling home was that obviously the result will be expunged from all records, as will Eddie's goal, but we think that the bookings will stand. It seems kinda unfair.
The waterlogged pitch didn't suit us at all. With so many short players (especially in attack) we had no choice but to try and keep the ball on the ground, but often it simply sank! The team lined up as follows at the start of the game (I'm not giving the players marks out of ten this time, because the match should never have kicked off):
|
Ovendale; Young, Cox, Howe, Vincent; Bailey; Berthe, Robinson, Hughes; Stein, Boli.
